Free Guide — Step 03 of 05
Register on
SAM.gov
SAM.gov registration is mandatory to receive payment on any federal contract. Free but takes up to 10 business days. Here's the complete walkthrough.
Before You Start
What You Need Ready
- Legal business name — exactly as registered with your state
- EIN — from the IRS
- USDOT number — from FMCSA
- MC number — active operating authority
- Business address — physical, no P.O. boxes
- Banking information — routing and account number for EFT
- NAICS codes — know which apply to your operation
- Login.gov account — create free at login.gov
Warning: SAM.gov registration is free. Never pay a third party to register you. Scam services charge $300-$500 for something that costs nothing.
Step 1
Create Your Login.gov Account
Free10 minutes
- Go to login.gov
- Click Create an account
- Enter your business email and create a password
- Set up two-factor authentication (required)

Start Your Registration
Free1–2 hours
- Go to sam.gov and sign in
- Click Register New Entity
- Select Business or Organization
- Select All Awards as your purpose
- Enter your business name, address, EIN
- SAM.gov assigns your UEI automatically
Tip: Your legal business name must match your IRS EIN records exactly — even small differences cause validation failures.
Step 3
Add NAICS Codes
Add all trucking NAICS codes that apply: 484110, 484121, 484122, 484210, 484220, 484230. See Guide 04 for the full breakdown.
Step 4
Enter Banking Information
The federal government pays all contractors via EFT — no paper checks. You must provide your bank routing number, account number, and account type.
Use a dedicated business bank account, not a personal account.
Step 5
Submit and Wait
Up to 10 business days
After submitting, SAM.gov validates your information against IRS databases. Do not bid on contracts until your status shows Active.
Annual Renewal
Keep Your Registration Active
SAM.gov registrations expire every 12 months. Renewal is free and takes about 30 minutes. Set a calendar reminder 11 months from your registration date.
