Get Your DOT &
MC Number

Before you can haul federal government freight you need a USDOT number and MC authority from the FMCSA. Here's exactly how to get both.

Before You Start
What You Need Ready

Have these ready before starting:

  • Business name — exactly as registered with your state
  • EIN — get free at IRS.gov
  • Business address — physical, no P.O. boxes
  • Credit or debit card — for the $300 MC fee
Tip: Form your LLC before applying. It protects your personal assets and looks more credible to federal contracting officers.
Step 1
Get Your USDOT Number — Free
FreeSame day
  1. Go to portal.fmcsa.dot.gov/URS/
  2. Click Register and create an account
  3. Select Carrier as your entity type
  4. Complete the form — takes 20-30 minutes
  5. Submit — your USDOT number is issued immediately
Important: A USDOT number alone does NOT give you authority to haul for-hire freight. You still need MC authority.
Step 2
Apply for MC Operating Authority — $300
$300 Fee3–4 weeks to activate
  1. Log into portal.fmcsa.dot.gov
  2. Select Operating Authority
  3. Choose Property (non-household goods)
  4. Pay the $300 fee
  5. Wait for the 10-day protest period to pass
  6. Your MC number is issued after the protest period
Warning: Do not haul any for-hire freight until your MC authority shows Active on the FMCSA website.
Step 3
Get Required Insurance
$3,000–$12,000/year typical

You cannot activate MC authority without filing proof of insurance. Federal contracts require $1,000,000 or more in coverage — higher than standard commercial freight.

Your insurance company files the MCS-90 and BMC-91 directly with FMCSA. Make sure your agent knows how.

Tip: Ask specifically for agents who work with federal government contractors.
Step 4
File Your BOC-3 — $20-40
$20–$40Same day

A BOC-3 designates a process agent in every state. BOC-3 filing companies handle this for $20-40 total and file directly with FMCSA. Search "BOC-3 filing service" to find one.

Once your insurance and BOC-3 are filed, FMCSA activates your MC authority.

Next Step
Get Your UEI and Register on SAM.gov

Once your MC authority is Active, get your UEI number and register on SAM.gov to start bidding on federal contracts.
